THE TECHNOLOGY

What ARTAS® Is

ARTAS® is a robotic system for follicular unit excision. Before extraction begins, the system uses imaging and an AI-guided algorithm to map follicle locations, angles, and spacing across the donor area. The robotic arm then uses that map to guide extraction — selecting follicles based on spacing and distribution to preserve donor-area density.

OUR TECHNIQUE

How the Technology Works

  • The ARTAS® system harvests grafts using a dual-punch instrument. A sharp inner punch scores the boundary around each follicle. A blunt outer punch then rotates to dissect the follicle from surrounding tissue — without cutting it. This blunt-dissection step is the central design principle for follicle preservation.
  • The robotic arm applies consistent harvesting parameters across the entire session. Unlike manual FUE, which depends on the surgeon maintaining the same precision across hours of work, the robotic parameters do not vary with session length.
  • After harvesting, a trained technician manually removes and prepares each graft. The robotic arm scores and dissects; it does not remove grafts. Graft preparation — and the inspection step that Dr. Alexander performs before placement — proceeds the same way regardless of harvesting method.

WHAT STAYS THE SAME

What ARTAS® Does Not Change

The part of hair transplant surgery that creates the final result is placement: where recipient sites are made, at what angle and depth, and how grafts are positioned within them.
That part is identical at Biltmore regardless of whether ARTAS® or handheld FUE is used for harvesting. Custom-cut blades, known as the lateral-slit technique, are matched to each follicle’s dimensions. Sites prepared before grafts arrive. Every graft inspected before placement. The result looks the same because the placement technique is the same.

CANDIDACY

ARTAS® or Manual FUE: How the Choice Is Made

Dr. Alexander performs both ARTAS® robotic FUE and handheld manual FUE. The choice is made at the consultation based on what is best for each patient — not based on which system is available.

Patients who prefer robotic-assisted harvesting, or whose donor characteristics are a strong fit for the ARTAS® algorithm, may be good candidates for the robotic approach. Others may be better served by handheld technique, which Dr. Alexander is also trained and experienced in.

What is the difference between ARTAS® and manual FUE?

The extraction method differs between robotic versus handheld. The placement of grafts into the recipient area is ultimately performed the same way for both. Most patients cannot see a difference in their final result.

Is ARTAS® faster than manual FUE?

The robotic system operates at a consistent rate throughout the session. For some patients and session sizes, this is more efficient. For others, the benefit is more about consistency than speed. Dr. Alexander will give you a realistic time estimate at the consultation.

Is ARTAS® FDA-cleared?

Yes. ARTAS® is an FDA-cleared medical device.

Does robotic FUE cost more than manual FUE?

The consultation fee is complimentary. Procedure cost depends on graft count and individual case complexity. Dr. Alexander will provide specific pricing at the consultation.
