THE TREATMENT

What LLLT Is

Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is a non-surgical treatment that uses specific wavelengths of light — typically in the red to near-infrared spectrum (630–670 nanometers) — to stimulate activity in hair follicles that are in a weakened or miniaturized state.
The mechanism is photobiomodulation: light energy absorbed by cells in the follicle is theorized to stimulate mitochondrial activity which may increase cellular energy production, improve follicular circulation, and lengthen the hair growth cycle. The result, in patients who respond, is that existing follicles produce hair that is denser, fuller, and less prone to shedding.
LLLT is not a cure for androgenetic alopecia. It does not reverse follicles that have fully miniaturized. It works best as a tool to support the follicles that are still active.

REGULATORY STATUS

FDA Clearance

Several low-level laser devices for hair growth have received FDA clearance through the 510(k) pathway as Class II medical devices for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia. FDA clearance means the device has been reviewed and found to be substantially equivalent to a legally marketed predicate device — it is a meaningful regulatory standard.
Note: FDA clearance (510(k)) and FDA approval (PMA or drug approval) are distinct regulatory pathways. LLLT devices for hair growth are FDA-cleared. This distinction matters — do not conflate the two.

CANDIDACY

Who LLLT Is Best Suited For

LLLT is most effective in patients with active follicles — those in the early-to-mid stages of androgenetic alopecia who still have some native hair in the area being treated.

Patients who tend to respond

  • Men and women with androgenetic alopecia at early-to-mid stages
  • Patients with diffuse thinning rather than fully bald areas
  • Post-transplant patients using LLLT to support the health of newly placed grafts and native hair

LLLT is generally not effective for

  • Areas of the scalp where follicles have been fully absent for an extended period
  • Non-androgenetic hair loss conditions (alopecia areata, traction alopecia)
  • Patients expecting the same outcome as hair transplant surgery

For many patients, LLLT is most useful as part of a broader hair health strategy — alongside medical management (finasteride or minoxidil, where appropriate) or as a post-transplant support tool.
